============================================================KEVIN’S KORNER

November 1, 2009

It’s interesting that all the stores are all geared up (or just about all geared up) for Christmas and we have just barely made it to Halloween.  Some of us become angry when we notice all the displays for Christmas and we have haven’t even celebrated Thanksgiving.  Why is that?

Do you think it’s because the stores make more money during Christmas and so they want to start the sales as soon as possible?  They are excited about Christmas for reasons different than we are.

Or, could it be that we have bought into the exchange of material gifts and realize that we are not focusing on the real reason behind the season?  We feel guilty, and that translates into anger.

If we wanted to be real Christians, everyday should be a “Christmas Day.”  Every day we should be seeking out ways to serve Christ and show Christ’s spirit of love and compassion to those who need it most.  Or we could simply say “Bah, Humbug” and think only of ourselves.

I urge you on as Paul did, “So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, have the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.” (Philipians 2:  1-2)

Blessings from the Blessing Box

One of my piano students asked why we named our little shop The Blessing Box.  I told her I don’t really know.  It just came to mind one day. Piano students often ask questions about our “stuff” & our food pantry.  Lots of my students bring us “stuff” & food—they think it’s “neat” that we share.  Some of our high school BETA club members have volunteered hours of work.  They think we’re “cool” to work with.  The Boy Scouts donated their garage sale leftovers to us last Saturday because they know of our “work.”  Nub Brown called & wants the youth of Pine Street to assist us in a “work” project

I think all of these things are wonderful.  Young people, curious and interested in a world of caring and sharing is “cool” and “neat” to me.  Today a little family was here for assistance and two loads of donations came in just as a piano student was leaving.  He put his music down and went out to help.  The little lady who needed assistance told me she was embarrassed to come in & use the four letter words she had to use-- “need & help”.  She said it all goes away when the door opens because a bigger four letter word fills our little Blessing Box.  That four letter word is “love”—and I think that’s “cool” and “neat”.

Thank you all & May God Bless!

Our Youth

Lately our young people have found themselves facing the challenges of adults--juggling responsibilities.  We’re appreciating the fact that they are managing to incorporate school, activities, and gainful employment, even though it means we don’t enjoy the pleasure of their company as often.

The younger ones have been keeping busy with their school work and activities as well.  We are fortunate to have such a special assortment of young people among us!

Time

To Order!

As is our tradition, we will place live poinsettias in our sanctuary during the holiday season.  Orders are being accepted now and the plants will be picked up the week of Thanksgiving.  An order form is enclosed; you can pick one up in the church office, or send us an email and then drop off your remittance by November 22.

WOMEN’S MINISTRY

The morning group met Oct 20 and enjoyed a great program given by Cora Beaty on the different hats women wear in the church.  Everyone had a good laugh and then we ate lunch at the Winnsboro Bakery.  We also packed up 155 sacks of food for school children.

There will be an extra morning meeting this month due to getting ready for the Christmas in the Park.  Please join with us Tuesday, November 10 for final pricing of the items left from last year.

The evening group will meet Nov 11 at 6:30 for their regular meeting with Cora Beaty presenting the study and worship on "Give Me This Living Water".  Items were delivered to Morgan's Mercy Mansion as well as the monthly gift of $30.00.  One prayer blanket was delivered.   Be sure to let us know of anyone who is seriously ill who might benefit from a blanket and knowing that we are praying for them.

Blessings to all,

Julie

A Special Opportunity

Many of you may already be aware that our church is adopting a local family during the holiday season this year.  Our women’s group is heading this project and will be putting up our own special “angel tree’ from which we can pick a gift to contribute.  If you’d like more information, feel free to contact Julie Craddock-Bragg or Shannon Oliver.
